چکیده

The work of adhesion of bimaterial interfaces is commonly computed using quantum mechanical methods in which the two materials are strained into coherency. There is no relaxation of the coherency by the formation of an array of interfacial misfit dislocations, contrary to what is commonly observed for essentially all systems other than very thin films. In this paper, we investigate the errors introduced into the work of adhesion associated with the assumption of coherency. Series of atomistic simulations in two and three dimensions are performed using a simple Lennard-Jones-type model potential. We demonstrate that the assumption of coherency introduces errors that increase rapidly with misfit (for small misfit) and can easily be of the order of several tens of percent. We trace the source of these errors to the neglect of the elastic fields of misfit dislocations and to the variation in the number of bonds per unit interfacial area with misfit when coherency is assumed. Suggestions are made to minimize and/or correct for

First-principles calculations and phenomenological modeling of lattice misfit in Ni-base superalloys

′ An integrated computational approach is proposed for evaluating the lattice misfit between and in Ni-base superalloys by combining rst-principles calculations, existing experimental data and phenomenological modeling. In particular, the lattice misfits in Ni–Al and Ni–Al–Mo lloys were studied. This approach is validated by comparing the calculated lattice misfit with available experimental me...

First-principles modeling of strain in perovskite ferroelectric thin films

We review the role that first-principles calculations have played in understanding the effects of substrate-imposed misfit strain on epitaxially grown perovskite ferroelectric films. We do so by analyzing the case of BaTiO3, complementing our previous publications on this subject with unpublished data to help explain in detail how these calculations are done. We also review similar studies in t...

Structural perfection in poorly lattice matched heterostructures

Continuum elastic theory is applied to the formation of misfit dislocations and point defects in strained layer structures. Explicit calculations of the energies of misfit dislocations in the doubleand single-kink geometries yield line tensions below which strained films are stable with respect to defect formation. Our results yield a mismatch-dependent stability limit which, in the double kink...

The peculiarity of the metal-ceramic interface

Important properties of materials are strongly influenced or controlled by the presence of solid interfaces, i.e. from the atomic arrangement in a region which is a few atomic spacing wide. Using the quantitative analysis of atom column positions enabled by CS-corrected transmission electron microscopy and theoretical calculations, atom behaviors at and adjacent to the interface was carefully e...

A comparing study on the evolution of Pd/Ni (10 0) and Pt/Ni(10 0) heteroepitaxial systems

Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study the strain relief and the evolution of Pd/ Ni(10 0) and Pt/Ni(10 0) heteroepitaxial systems by using embedded atom method. The atomistic mechanism for the formation of misfit dislocation in Pd/Ni(10 0) and Pt/Ni(10 0) epitaxial islands is analyzed by comparing the evolution behaviors of the two systems. The simulation results reveal that the...
